Top five reasons to service your boiler this winter

Top five reasons to service your boiler this winter

We may have had one of the hottest summers on record but that is somewhat of a distant memory now cold winds and downpours are becoming a regular occurrence. Looking back over the last few winters we have experienced plummeting temperatures with prolonged periods of ice and snow causing disruption all over the country not to mention the damage to our boilers!

It is times like these when our boilers become our best friend but not when they decide to break down. Not all heating failures can be prevented but steps can be put into place to help reduce them in the long run.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, heating accounts for about 55 per cent of what you spend in a year on energy bills so an efficient boiler makes a big difference. This is why we have compiled five reasons to service your boiler so that you are prepared for the season ahead and can enjoy your turkey on the big day.

Energy bills are on the rise

If you have noticed a large increase in your energy bills that is not connected to your supplier; this may be a good indication that there is an issue with your boiler’s performance. The modern boilers of today are energy efficient and designed to help you save money. Therefore if you have an older model, you are likely to be paying more ££’s.

Age of Your Boiler

Boilers should last up to 15 years so we recommend that when your heating system is reaching its 10th birthday, it’s time to start thinking about saving for a new one. We also suggest an annual service to help keep the elements in tip top condition year on year. Our talented team of gas safe engineers are qualified to ensure your boiler is safe to use and indicate areas in need of repair as well as notifying you of any issues that become too expensive to handle.

We like to think of it in simple terms, the older a boiler gets, the harder it has to work to heat its surroundings. Therefore the age of a boiler warrants its efficiency consequently meaning the risk of breakdown is higher.

Numerous Boiler Breakdowns

Are you finding that you now know the local plumber out of hour’s number off by heart from the numerous call outs over the last few months? If so, this could be a sure sign that your heating system is on its way out. There are several key components of a boiler; all of which, if not functioning properly, can cause repeatable damage and require continuous repair. These include the heat exchanger, firebox, supply lines and circulator pumps to name a few.

As professionals in the commercial heating and gas industry, we strongly recommend these are thoroughly checked by a qualified engineer and the boiler is either regularly serviced or inevitably replaced to prevent further problems.

Responsibility

Our work spans across a range of environments with clients varying from NHS trusts, county councils, property developers and facilities management specialists. With this in mind, we understand the responsibility undertaken as a commercial building owner, the duty of ensuring your staff and customer’s wellbeing is looked after all year round. An annual service with ACS Southeast ensures a professional and regular cover for your boiler, complying with rules and regulations as your responsibilities dictate.

Yellow pilot light rather than healthy blue

It can be easy to dismiss the colour of a flame, especially when it isn’t something that you study on a daily basis. However we recommend that, if your flame is yellow rather than the healthy blue, your boiler could be leaking carbon monoxide. This is a dangerous, silent and poisonous gas and a sure sign that your boiler performance needs addressing as soon as possible and potentially replacing.
